There is no Dependable water source at The Happy Homestead! therefore, you must carry what you need. A minimum of one gallon per person per day is recommended. The extreme heat of summer and the ice and snow of winter can spoil an otherwise enjoyable back country trip if you are not properly prepared. Good hiking shoes and proper clothing are necessary to protect yourself from the elements and spiny plants. Be prepared for rapid and extreme changes in weather.
Camping is allowed in designated wilderness areas only.
All campsites must be out of sight and sound of established roadways and must be a minimum of 50 feet away from any road or trail.
If an area appears to have been used previously and you like the spot... Use It!

Camping is NOT permitted at the concert viewing area and/or the parking area.
Vehicles may be left at trailhead and parking areas but Driving off established roads is prohibited.
You must pack out of the Homestead all trash, litter and other debris associated with your trip. Do not burn or bury your trash.
Human Excrement!! should be buried in shallow holes 4 to 6 inches deep, at least 50 feet away from any trail, camp, or water source or be deposited in a Porta-Pottie.
Do not leave valuables in your vehicle unless out of sight or in trunk
Will there be a quiet camping area set up for families and those of us who need our beauty sleep? In theory, yes, but we’ve learned the hard way that we can not guarantee quiet camping. The vast majority of the Homesteaders like to stay up late. However, we will not give up in trying to set up a more mellow camping area! This year we are offering "Quieter Camping" :-) , a place where families and chill folks can hang out together and set the tone
What does it mean to be a responsible Pet Owner?
Being a responsible pet owner is easy, but it involves many things. It means making sure that your pet is not a nuisance. Basically this means being a "good citizen." It means making sure that your pet does not roam freely, destroy property, chase livestock, maul children or other animals, leave excrement behind where he/she goes in public, or become a nuisance barker, or in other ways decrease the quality of life of others in your community. It boils down to proper control, good training, cleaning up after your pet's messes, and providing your pet with enough physical exercise and mental stimulation that he does not create his own "vices" out of frustration.
IMBA Rules of the Trail
1. Ride on open trails only. 2. Leave no trace. 3. Control your bicycle. 4. Always yield trail. 5. Never spook animals. 6. Plan ahead.
Food Storage & Preparation
- · Use bear resistant food containers (BRFC) for food storage when possible. If you do not have a BRFC, then attempt to hang the food at least 10 feet above the ground and 10 feet from the nearest tree trunk. If not trees are available, hang the food from a cliff. If no cliffs are available, secret the food at least 10 m from your camping area but be aware that it may be gone by morning. A word to the wise: if bears get your food, please do what you can to report this to the proper authorities. Your accidental loss can become someone else's tragic loss.
- · · Handle wastewater appropriately:all washing/cooking liquids should never be drained in or around camp (water from boiled pasta, etc) - bears will key in on it
- · · Manage stove fuel carefully! Fuel spills are strong bear attractants, especially diesel and kerosene - refill Coleman stoves and lanterns with funnels and over spill containment
- · · All excess food should be zip-locked and placed in BRFC’s when not in use
